1. Stop, check for injuries, and move to safety
Check yourself, your passengers, and the other people involved. Call 911 if anyone may be injured, if a vehicle is creating an immediate roadway hazard, or if the situation feels unsafe. When no one is hurt and the vehicles can be driven, the Texas Department of Transportation advises moving out of the roadway to a safer place before exchanging information. Turn on hazard lights and stay alert for approaching traffic.
2. Take clear photos before details are forgotten
Use your phone to photograph every vehicle from several angles, visible damage, license plates, debris, skid marks, nearby traffic signs, signals, lane markings, and the overall location. Include close-ups and wider views that show how the vehicles relate to the roadway. Photograph weather or standing water when relevant. Avoid blocking traffic or putting yourself in danger just to get a picture.
3. Exchange complete and accurate information
Share names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s-license details, vehicle information, license-plate numbers, and insurance company and policy information. Note the exact date, time, and location. Ask witnesses for their names and contact details. It is usually better to record the needed information carefully than to post private documents publicly or share them with unrelated people.
4. Report the crash and save your records
Contact your insurance company as soon as practical and follow its claim instructions. For an Austin emergency, call 911. Save photographs, witness information, receipts, claim numbers, and any police or incident report details in one folder.
5. When the vehicle is a rental
